Synopsis:

In collaboration with the Inter-American Development Bank, the T&T Chamber hosted the first of a three-part Economic Transformation Series. At this informative session, Inter-American Development Bank (IDB) economist Dr. Jeetendra Khadan officially launched his book Are Oil and Gas Smothering the Private Sector in Trinidad and Tobago?

He demonstrates the necessity to craft a new reality for the Private Sector in Trinidad and Tobago. The non-hydrocarbon private sector can only sustain itself by becoming dynamic, employment generating, innovative and export oriented.  His findings and recommendations were debated by a regionally esteemed panel of business people including Prof. Avinash Persaud, Mr. Ronald Hinds, Mr. Andrew Aleong and Mr. Moonilal Lalchan.

The armchair discussion that followed addresses how businesses can overcome the challenges faced in the “new normal” with the aim to:

  • Expose the audience to new perspectives (in the manufacturing and distribution, energy and services sectors) in order to transform themselves by diversifying their portfolio;
  • Assist in realizing the new opportunities afforded to them under the country’s current economic circumstances which did not exist in the pre-2014 era;
  • Enlighten the audience on ways to earn foreign exchange, become more competitive and ultimately become more export oriented.
