In 2002, the Trinidad and Tobago Chamber of Industry and Commerce with assistance from the Government of Canada and with the participation of other private sector organizations formed the International Trade Negotiations Unit. The original objectives of the ITNU were:-
• To sensitize the private sector to the ongoing negotiations of Trade Agreements affecting CARICOM;
• Ensure that the interests of the private sector are adequately represented in the trade negotiations process and the negotiating activities;
• Dispense information to the private sector on the course and results of ongoing negotiations and seek in put on issues of interest or concern;
• Convey information on trade issues of interest or concern to the Ministry of Trade and Industry and provide input to the Ministry for CARICOM trade negotiations.
• Provide advisory services to the private sector on international trading matters;
• Concentrate on the services sector in Trinidad and Tobago, compiling data, researching issues and conducting other activities to facilitate export trade and competitiveness; and
• Participate effectively in international negotiations related to trade in services. Since that time, and with financial and other support from the Government of Trinidad and Tobago and the private sector itself, the ITNU has become a permanent fixture in the trade policy making apparatus of the country. Its private sector partners are American Chamber of Commerce of Trinidad and Tobago; Association of Trinidad and Tobago Insurance Companies. The ITNU now provides trade support to its stakeholders in all areas of international trade in goods and services.
